Rules & Mechanics
Aug. 19th, 2013 12:51 amhollywoodland is an AU sandbox set in 1930's Hollywood. Characters are drawn to Hollywood for various reasons. Maybe they were born and raised in the area. Maybe they've always wanted to be a movie star. Maybe they are a gambler on the run from the mob. It doesn't matter why they are there, it just matters that they are there!
The focus of Hollywoodland is on logs. There is no network in Hollywoodland. You don't have to write in prose format, brackets are fine.
Characters must be AUed to be native to the world of Hollywoodland. This is non-negotiable and is important to the premise.
Those who wish to pursue a career at Galaxy Pictures are asked to submit a survey to determine which areas of entertainment they are best suited to. Each potential star has 30 points to distribute amongst the following categories:
Physique:
Facial Features:
Coordination:
Musical Abilities:
Dramatic Abilities:
Comedic Abilities:
Natural Charisma:
Versatility:
Film productions are assigned by the H.C. Hathaway, using RNG to split up the film productions. How the film is received depends on the film genre and natural abilities of the cast and crew. Films enter production every month or so with casts and crews being shifted. The more films you star in, the more star power you have. The more star power you have, the more sway you have over production decisions.
After starring in five films, your character is allowed to lobby for a particular film to be made or a specific casting choice. If your character has been dying to star in a musical but is continually cast in horror films, this is your chance to pick your part.
Each participant earns $500 per picture. After five films, your pay increases to $1200. After seven, to $10000. After ten films, you can start making demands and the sky is the limit!
Characters who choose not to be actors but would still like to be part of the studio game are allowed to submit "scripts", i.e., short premises for films. Film genres include musicals, horror, war, western, drama, comedy, mystery, romance, and science fiction.
Characters can hold any job, so long as it's plausible for 1930's California and doesn't step on anyone else's toes. Politicians, police officers, private eyes, gangsters, gossip columnists, etc. are all welcome in Hollywoodland.
We are exploring this world together. Obviously there will be issues to iron out. That said, there is plenty of fun to be had as we give this a test spin!
Rules to play are very simple. Stay in character and be nice. This is meant to be free-form and easy going. There is no activity requirement, you can come and go at will, however since this is just in the early stages, please ask first if you don't know any of the players involved.
If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to ask them here!
